Canada's censorship regime isn't erected by an overnight incursion, but an incremental crusade lead in the name of "promoting Canadian content," resulting in unprecedented regulation of the internet.
I heard one theory on this government overreach that I think is plausible. These governments know that they cannot get around the first amendment in the US so they are creating these “censorship” rules in their own countries to eventually make the social media platforms “give in” due to so many rules across the globe that they in turn stop allowing certain content altogether. I hope not but the Covid debacle certainly showed where their minds are at. Especially Trudeau.
Bank accounts get frozen in the US as well. Quite a few years ago, our state government DHHS accidentally seized all the money in the bank accounts for everyone paying child support. Hundreds woke up one morning to find they suddenly had no money. It took the state over a week to correct the mistake and put the money bank into people's accounts. The refused to pay restitution or damages, because apparently government officials can't be held responsible for their mistakes, no matter how egregious. They already have this power and your bank will fold instantly the moment they get a letter from anyone in "authority." The government only has to flip a switch. We will not have any warning or chance to defend ourselves.
Can't these despotic rules be avoided simply by moving the official location of a site from Canada to some nation not filled with control freaks? Does the law forbid someone who lives in Canada from posting without restriction on an American site, for example? Yes, government thugs could still forbid that site from being shown in Canada, but at least authors could write what they liked for consumption in the free world.
I find it ironic that the very groups of people who are in power (or who want to sway Governments) will often accuse others of attempting to create a "state religion" are the very people pushing for legislation for the punishment of viewpoints that are outside of a very narrow band in spectrum.
Wow is all I can say. As a Canadian now living in Australia, I have less and less desire to move back to Canada. It is no longer the true north strong and free. My extended family all live in Chilliwack as well!
Very true Bruce. I am not saying Australia is any better. In fact there are becoming fewer places that I would consider to live given the way the governments manage the countries.
Yes, my primary concern is that I will have trouble sharing my own Substack because they are limiting such things. I'm also concerned that Substack hasn't necessarily taken a position on this issue.
"“Canadian” content should be preferentially celebrated, consumed, and amplified."
Oh, look...
Nationalism.
What could possibly go wrong?
I wonder how long before they declare Jews aren't Canadian...
For all that's wrong in the world, I blame the members of the establishment press more than any other "captured" group.

I just thought Canada was boring...
...but they actually have “culture”
It just has to be forced down Canadian’s throats...

Excellent and important piece. Thank you.
Trudeau is a Nazi in the purest sense of the word.
If t it's there it's comming here Biden would love nothing more than to shut Americans up

It's long past time to "flip the switch" on our gangster governments.

Your adopted government hasn't acted much better with its Stalinist Covid lockdowns and suppression of speech.

Shouldn't it be abundantly clear that, with its intensive focus on race, the present leftist government of Canada is racist and divisive to its core?
