A fine article by two fine scientists. In my home Province of British Columbia the entire COIVD period was marked by a complete suppression of scientific discussion in the mainstream press. An endless series of televised lectures from our Provincial Health Officer, filled with COVID misinformation (e.g. "we are getting more and more serious cases in younger people", "the vaccine will stop the spread of COVID". etc etc.) went completely unexamined by the press. Literally no critical questions were asked. It is not just the science establishment, but the whole apparatus of informed public discussion failed. This is correctly identified by the authors of this piece as the central most critical failure: if we cannot publicly discuss the science and the medical options freely, our policy responses will be sub-optimal, almost by definition. Go team freedom!

It would be extremely interesting to actually see Peter Hotez stand up for his views on Covid take a real stage and debate some of the people he so easily attacks from afar, from the safety and leisure of his home or office. This way he can confront people without having to argue against a walking, talking human being that can easily expose him for the bought and paid for charlatan that he is.
I couldn't agree more! Freedom of speech, discussion, debate and the ability to point out flaws in existing theories and ideas is the very lifeblood of science. Without it, 'science' becomes dogma.

The insert on this substack about benzodiazepines makes me so angry. In 2001 at the age of 16 my daughter got her first part time job working as a cashier at Bulk Barn. She was so nervous which gave her the shakes. She decided to make a doctor’s appointment for help. Our family doctor, Dr. Norma Wright put her on high doses of lorazepam and propranolol. I started seeing changes in my daughter. She’d cry at the drop of a hat. I concluded it was drug related. I told her the drugs were effecting her. She made another appointment but the doctor just reduced her dosage much to my dismay. I continued to see changes in my daughter and begged her to get off the drugs. My husband intervened and told me to leave her alone as the doctor knew what she was doing. I was so upset. I started researching for papers on the drug. There was an excellent paper out of the U.k which totally alarmed me. I wanted my daughter to read it but she had no interest, she was well addicted. I worried so much and talked to a few doctors including our family doctor who all told me there was nothing to worry about. Nobody would listen to me. My daughter was on lorazepam for almost 13 years. She also in that time was drinking along with the lorazepam. We paid to get her in to rehab at Homewood. The councillor told us that benzodiazepines are highly addictive and has set her up for addiction for the rest of her life. Also, I read that paper from the U.K and fear for her future.
