Fantastic conversation Dr. B. I had never heard the statistics you gave regarding the devastating effects lockdowns/NPIs had on the children of Uganda. Having traveled there and visited a rural medical center, I can tell you that they are some of the most kind, open, and wonderful people I have ever met. The poverty, however, is staggering and education is their only chance. I don't think people realize how harmful the "recommendations" from our public health establishments actually were. Countless less advanced countries looked to the US for guidance on school closures, and followed the non-evidence based and extremely restrictive policies that were "suggested" to the letter. In essence, much of the developing world mirrored blue state policies, but without any real infrastructure which would allow for any reasonable degree of remote learning.
A personal anecdote: my wife and I visited Baja Mexico in 2021. There were no restrictions to travel to Mexico whatsoever. The restaurants, shops, and hotels of the tourist areas in Cabo San Lucas were completely open. Those densely populated areas with constant influx of internationals tourists was deemed by the government to be level green, a low risk for transmission. When we traveled to the more rural areas, however, we found local restaurants and schools closed, and universal mask mandates in place. Apparently the risk in these poorly populated, not-tourist areas was deemed a level red, high risk for transmission. It was explained to me by my guide that the local government felt that if the people believed that there was a significant risk, and their local officials acted to protected them, it would be more likely they would remain in office. If anyone asked questions, they would just say they were following CDC guidance.
